About Hatteras Hammocks
Hatteras Hammocks is a rope and fabric hammock manufacturer founded in 1971 in Greenville, North Carolina, by Walter R. Perkins Jr., now operated by his son as part of parent company The Hammock Source.
Heritage & History
Hatteras Hammocks began in 1971 when founder Walter R. Perkins Jr., then a traveling buyer for the American Tobacco Company, bought a rope hammock on a Carolina beach trip, took it apart to see how it worked, and set about building a better one. He sold his early hammocks out of the trunk of his car during trips across the Southeast, and by 1987 the company had grown into what it describes as the world's top hammock producer.
The company remains family-run, with Perkins' son, Walter R. Perkins III, now serving as CEO of what is now a 50-plus-year-old business. Over the decades Hatteras introduced its own DURACORD rope, quilted and tufted hammock designs, and steel hammock stand innovations, while staying headquartered in Greenville, North Carolina, the town where it started.
Made in Greenville, North Carolina
Hatteras Hammocks manufactures its products at a 300,000-square-foot factory in Greenville, North Carolina, organized into dedicated shops for fabric, rope, weaving, woodworking, metal, and finishing. Rope is machine-spun into strands and precision-twisted into the company's own DURACORD rope, then hand-woven by artisans into finished hammock bodies.
Wood spreader bars are precision-cut and hand-dipped in marine-grade varnish, steel hammock stands are welded from heavy-gauge pipe using a patented connection method, and every hammock is inspected for strength and weave quality before shipping. The company describes this blend of hand-weaving and in-house manufacturing processes as "the Hatteras Difference."
