Max Gitman opened the Ashland Shirt & Pajama Company in Ashland, Pennsylvania in 1932, in the coal mining town where he settled after emigrating to America. The company grew steadily through the mid-20th century as Ashland's textile industry expanded, eventually becoming one of the anchor manufacturers in the region. As overseas competition hollowed out American shirt manufacturing through the 1980s and 1990s, Gitman Brothers made the choice to stay — investing in quality rather than competing on price with overseas production.
Gitman Vintage, launched in 2008, gave the brand a direct-to-consumer presence and introduced Gitman's craftsmanship to a new generation of clothing enthusiasts who valued American-made over fast fashion. The Vintage line brought the same shirt-making expertise into bold prints, oxford weaves, and madras patterns that became collector items. Gitman Bros. is now one of the last American shirt manufacturers with all production genuinely remaining in the United States.
