Birmingham's Iron Legacy

Meadowcraft was founded in 1945 in Birmingham, Alabama — a city that built its economy on iron and steel production and became known as the Pittsburgh of the South. Birmingham's industrial heritage gave Meadowcraft access to skilled metalworkers and the steel supply chain needed to produce high-quality wrought-iron furniture.

Production today runs from the company's manufacturing and distribution facility in Wadley, Alabama, about 90 miles east of Birmingham, per Meadowcraft's own history page.

The company established itself in the postwar outdoor furniture market with a distinctive design philosophy: ornate nature-inspired patterns that brought decorative ironwork to American backyards. The Dogwood pattern, featuring detailed flowers and branches, became the company's signature and remains in production today more than seven decades after its introduction.

The Art of Wrought Iron

Meadowcraft furniture begins as steel rod and flat stock that workers cut, bend, and weld into the distinctive lattice and scroll patterns that define the brand. The Dogwood line requires dozens of individual components — petals, branches, leaves, and stems — that are welded together by hand before final assembly.

After welding, each piece goes through a multi-step finishing process: grinding welds smooth, sandblasting to remove scale and mill skin, applying a zinc-rich primer for corrosion resistance, and finally powder-coating in the customer's chosen color. The powder coat finish is baked on at high temperature, creating a hard, durable surface that resists chipping and UV fading.

Porch Heritage

Meadowcraft furniture occupies a specific place in American outdoor living history. The company's products were designed for the American porch and patio as these spaces developed from functional outdoor areas into rooms for relaxation and entertaining.

The elaborate ironwork patterns that Meadowcraft produces are labor-intensive to manufacture — which is precisely why most competitors have moved production overseas. Meadowcraft's continued Alabama manufacturing reflects both the company's heritage commitment and the skills of its Birmingham workforce, who carry on a tradition of metal fabrication that stretches back to the city's industrial founding.
