Fort Payne, Alabama earned the title 'Sock Capital of the World' through the 20th century, when DeKalb County mills produced more hosiery per capita than anywhere else on earth. Thousands of Alabama families built livelihoods in the sock industry before low-cost import competition hollowed out the industry in the 1990s and 2000s. Zkano launched in 2009 to prove that premium domestic sock manufacturing could survive by moving upmarket — choosing certified organic cotton, transparent domestic sourcing, and direct-to-consumer distribution over commodity production. Today Zkano's Fort Payne mill carries forward Alabama's sock-knitting heritage using US-grown organic cotton and low-impact dyes, keeping alive a manufacturing tradition that defines the region's identity.
