Heritage & History
Phil Ford, a real estate appraiser in Raleigh, North Carolina, spent the better part of the 1980s trying to recreate his mother's Western North Carolina-style barbecue sauce. By 1987 he had a recipe worth sharing. In September 1992, his sister-in-law Sandi Ford and her husband Lynn — already running a fourth-generation Raleigh produce business rooted in the family farm since 1946 — told Phil they wanted to be his partners. Sandi coined the name on a drive to Charleston: the sauce was so good, you'd suck on the bones to get the last drop. Their first 100-case order went to a North Carolina co-packer in the summer of 1992, and the sauce hit shelves that October.
The brand's national reputation came quickly. Bone Suckin' Sauce won the NC Battle of the Sauces in March 1994, and that same year the Fords exhibited at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade show in New York, where the New York Times covered them on the food section's front page. The company today exports to 80 countries while remaining a privately held, family-operated business based at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh — the same city where the recipe was born.
Made in North Carolina
Bone Suckin' Sauce is manufactured in North Carolina by a state-based co-packer that has produced the sauce since the brand's first commercial run in 1992. The company, operating as Ford's Gourmet Foods, is headquartered at 1109 Agriculture Street in Raleigh at the State Farmers Market. The sauce is third-party tested and verified as Made in the USA, produced in glass bottles without high-fructose corn syrup, gluten, or artificial preservatives.
Ford's Gourmet Foods employs more than 50 people and has built its domestic supply chain around North Carolina ingredients and producers. The brand's commitment to its home state is part of its identity — a family business that has grown from 100 cases to global distribution without leaving Raleigh.
