Sandi coined the name on a drive to Charleston: the sauce was so good, you'd suck on the bones to get the last drop. Their first 100-case order went to a North Carolina co-packer in the summer of 1992, and the sauce hit shelves that October.
The brand's national reputation came quickly. Bone Suckin' Sauce won the NC Battle of the Sauces in March 1994, and that same year the Fords exhibited at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade show in New York, where the New York Times covered them on the food section's front page.
