About Primal Pet Foods
Primal Pet Foods is a raw pet food maker founded by Matt Koss in the early 2000s after switching his dog Luna to a raw, bones-and-food diet; it manufactures frozen and freeze-dried raw dog and cat food, toppers, and treats at its own facilities in Fairfield, California and Abilene, Texas.
Heritage & History
Primal Pet Foods traces its start to a dog named Luna, who in the early 2000s showed early signs of renal failure. After exhausting other options, Luna's owner Matt Koss followed a holistic veterinarian's advice to switch her to a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet of bones and raw food, and her appetite, energy, and health quickly improved. Seeing those results firsthand, Matt founded Primal Pet Foods to help more dogs and cats live healthy, vibrant lives on raw nutrition.
The company has since grown into a raw-feeding specialist offering frozen, freeze-dried, and shelf-stable formats, and partnered with the University of Illinois to study the digestibility and gut-health benefits of minimally processed raw nutrition versus higher-heat-processed pet food formats. Primal states it never uses synthetic vitamins or minerals, sources proteins raised without antibiotics, steroids, or added hormones, and uses only certified USDA Organic produce.
Made in Fairfield, California and Abilene, Texas
Primal Pet Foods manufactures its balanced raw recipes in its own facilities in Fairfield, California and Abilene, Texas. The company uses high-pressure processing, a proprietary blend of probiotics, and a test-and-hold protocol on every batch to ensure food safety before products reach customers.
Primal describes itself as picky about its ingredients and where they come from, formulating recipes without corn, wheat, soy, legumes, or lentils, and conducting routine post-production nutrient testing on each recipe under the direction of an on-staff companion animal nutritionist.
