About Metolius
Metolius has been handcrafting rock climbing equipment in Bend, Oregon since 1983, manufacturing the cams, harnesses, hangboards, and chalk bags used by climbers from Yosemite's granite faces to the limestone crags of the American West.
Born on Oregon Rock
Metolius was founded in 1983 in Bend, Oregon — a city that has become one of the premier outdoor recreation destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by the volcanic rock of the Cascade Range and with Smith Rock State Park just 30 miles away, Bend is home to a climbing community that provided both the testing ground and the customer base for Metolius from its earliest days.
The company's founders were climbers who began designing and building their own gear when they couldn't find the quality and performance they needed in commercially available equipment. This user-as-designer philosophy has characterized Metolius throughout its history: the people building the gear are the people using the gear.
Handcrafted in Bend
All Metolius products are manufactured in Bend, Oregon. The company employs craftspeople who machine, sew, assemble, and test climbing equipment to the rigorous standards required for life-safety products. Spring-loaded camming devices (SLCDs) — the cams that climbers place in cracks for protection — require precise machining tolerances; harnesses require consistent stitching that meets UIAA load ratings; training boards require accurately sized holds for progressive training.
The Bend facility's proximity to Smith Rock and other climbing areas allows Metolius product developers to field-test new designs under real climbing conditions before they reach customers. This testing rigor — combined with the UIAA and CE certifications that Metolius pursues for its life-safety products — reflects the company's understanding that climbing equipment failures have consequences beyond product returns.
