Heritage & History
William Bultman founded Uncle Goose in 1983 after discovering that no American company was still making wooden alphabet blocks for children. Working out of his home workshop in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bultman began hand-producing classic wood blocks using locally sourced Great Lakes basswood — a soft, light-colored wood ideal for embossed lettering. His sons Scott and Pete joined the business in its early years, turning a one-man operation into a family enterprise. William passed away in 1992, and Scott and Pete carried the company forward.
Pete Bultman eventually became sole owner and president, guiding Uncle Goose through financial pressures in the mid-2000s and steering the brand toward a broader mission. What began as a single set of 28 ABC blocks expanded into language sets in Arabic, Braille, Chinese, Spanish, and more than a dozen other languages, as well as specialty collections covering the periodic table, planets, constellations, and mythology. The company celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023 as an independent, family-rooted business still operating from its original city.
Made in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Every Uncle Goose product is made at the company's factory in Grand Rapids. The manufacturing process is hands-on: basswood sourced from the Great Lakes region is cut, embossed, silk-screened with non-toxic vegetable-based and soy inks, and assembled by skilled workers on the shop floor. Scrap wood from production runs is repurposed into secondary product lines so virtually nothing goes to waste.
Grand Rapids has a deep manufacturing heritage rooted in furniture and woodworking, which gives Uncle Goose access to a skilled local labor pool and the infrastructure to sustain small-batch domestic production. The company is one of the few toy makers anywhere in the country to have held firm on American manufacturing for more than four decades, at a time when virtually every competitor shifted production overseas.
