Heritage & History
Dr. John Matthews founded SureFire in 1979 in Fountain Valley, California, initially to develop laser sighting systems for handguns. The precision machining and optical engineering expertise developed for laser sights translated naturally into high-performance flashlights, and SureFire produced its first tactical illumination tools in the 1980s. The company's lights became standard issue for US military special operations forces and law enforcement tactical units, earning a reputation for reliability that consumer-grade flashlights could not match.
SureFire pioneered the category of tactical flashlights specifically engineered for weapon mounting, low-profile carry, and operation under adverse conditions. The brand's early adoption by Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and federal law enforcement agencies provided credibility that drove adoption across the military and law enforcement communities. SureFire remains a primary supplier to US armed forces and has seen its lights deployed in every major US military operation since the Gulf War.
Machined in Fountain Valley, California
SureFire manufactures all of its flashlights, headlamps, and weapon lights at its Fountain Valley, California facility in Orange County. The production process centers on CNC machining of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy — the same material class used in aircraft structural components — to tolerances that ensure watertight seals, consistent thread fit, and precise optical alignment. Every SureFire light body is machined, anodized, and assembled in California before undergoing the quality testing that justifies military procurement contracts.
The Fountain Valley facility houses engineering, machining, optical assembly, and quality control under one roof, giving SureFire tight control over the design-to-production pipeline. The company holds numerous patents on illumination technology, switch systems, and mounting interfaces developed by its California engineering team. That concentration of in-house expertise — machining, optics, electronics, and military specification compliance — in a single Southern California facility is the foundation of SureFire's ability to meet the demands of the world's most exacting customers.
