Smartwool was founded in 1994 by Peter and Patty Duke in Steamboat Springs, Colorado — ski instructors who wanted merino wool socks that actually performed in cold mountain conditions. The brand has grown into the category-defining merino sock brand, with design and development headquartered in Denver and manufacturing partnerships with mills in Tennessee and North Carolina.
The domestic manufacturing collaboration is a deliberate commitment. Smartwool works with American textile facilities that have the technical capability to knit merino wool at the density required for performance socks — more stitches per inch than conventional sock knitting, which produces the feel and durability that the brand is known for.
What Merino Does Differently
Merino wool's performance properties come from fiber characteristics that synthetic materials approximate but don't replicate.
