Heritage & History

The Post-it Note was invented in 1968 when 3M scientist Dr. Spencer Silver accidentally developed a repositionable adhesive while trying to create a super-strong glue. The adhesive stuck but could be removed cleanly — and for years nobody knew what to do with it. Then in 1974, 3M colleague Art Fry had a flash of insight: he used Silver's adhesive to create bookmarks that would stick to his hymnal without damaging the pages. The Post-it Note was born.

Commercial launch came in 1980, and the product became one of the best-selling office products in history. In 1984, 3M moved Post-it Note production to Cynthiana, Kentucky, where the Cynthiana plant became the global manufacturing hub for the iconic sticky note. Today the Cynthiana facility produces approximately 80 billion Post-it Notes per year — enough to wrap around Earth's equator 152 times.
