OtterBox has engineered protective cases for mobile devices in Fort Collins, Colorado since 1998, setting the standard for rugged device protection through military-grade drop testing and building one of the most trusted technology accessory brands in America.
Fort Collins Engineering Culture
OtterBox was founded in 1998 in Fort Collins, Colorado by Curt Richardson. The initial products were watertight cases for electronics — designed in Colorado for the outdoor recreation culture that defines the region. Fort Collins is a university town adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park, surrounded by fishing streams, hiking trails, and backcountry that creates genuine demand for rugged, protective gear.
The founding insight was that electronic devices were becoming essential equipment for outdoor activities, but the cases available weren't designed to survive the conditions outdoor enthusiasts put equipment through. Richardson applied an engineering approach — understand the failure modes, design to prevent them, test to verify — that became the OtterBox development philosophy.
Military Standard Drop Testing
OtterBox cases are tested to Military Standard 810G, a Department of Defense specification that defines drop, vibration, temperature, and environmental resistance requirements for equipment used in military conditions. Meeting MIL-SPEC 810G requires systematic testing against specific parameters, not just general claims of ruggedness.
The Defender Series — OtterBox's signature three-layer protection system — combines a polycarbonate inner shell, a synthetic rubber slipcover, and a built-in screen protector. The three layers address different failure modes: rigid plastic resists point impact, rubber dissipates shock energy, screen protection prevents glass cracking from face-down drops. The multi-layer approach was an engineering design decision, not a marketing decision.
The Brand That Protects American Devices
OtterBox grew from a local Colorado product into the dominant premium phone case brand in the United States. The Fort Collins engineering and design team has tracked every major smartphone platform — iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel — releasing compatible cases at device launch through carrier and retail relationships that competitors have struggled to match.
The brand's expansion into coolers, dry boxes, and outdoor gear extends the same protection-engineering philosophy from mobile devices to outdoor equipment. The Fort Collins headquarters remains the center of product development, where Colorado's outdoor culture continues to inform what problems OtterBox engineers try to solve.
