Nulo is an Austin, Texas-based pet food brand that manufactures all of its dry dog and cat food in US-based USDA-inspected facilities, with high-protein grain-free formulas built around animal-first nutrition.
Heritage & History
Nulo was founded in 2009 in Austin, Texas by Michael Landa, who wanted to create premium pet food that reflected current nutritional science rather than commodity pet food economics. The founding insight was that cats and dogs are obligate or preferential carnivores whose nutritional needs are best met by high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets — a view that was gaining scientific support but had not yet reached mainstream pet food formulation.
The brand positioned itself at the premium end of independent pet specialty retail, competing with other premium brands on ingredient quality and protein percentages rather than on price.
Made in the USA
All Nulo dry dog and cat food is manufactured at USDA-inspected facilities in the United States. The formulas use animal proteins as the first ingredient — chicken, salmon, turkey, or beef depending on the recipe — and are free of corn, wheat gluten, soy, artificial preservatives, colors, and flavoring. The BC30 probiotic added to all Nulo formulas survives manufacturing and contributes to digestive health.
Nulo's FreeStyle and Challenger lines each emphasize different aspects of the high-protein, animal-first philosophy. FreeStyle focuses on ancestral nutrition principles; Challenger is designed around athletic performance for active dogs. Both are manufactured in the USA to the same quality standards.
