Heritage & History
Joseph Lodge founded the Blacklock Foundry in 1896 in the small town of South Pittsburg, Tennessee. After a fire destroyed the original foundry in 1910, Joseph rebuilt — naming the new company Lodge Manufacturing after himself. More than 125 years later, the company remains in the same town, still family-owned and still casting iron the way it always has.
South Pittsburg sits in the Tennessee River valley, where iron ore, timber, and water power once made it an ideal manufacturing hub. Lodge has outlasted every other American cast iron cookware brand, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and waves of cheap overseas competition.
Made in Tennessee
Every piece of Lodge cast iron cookware is poured and finished at the South Pittsburg foundry. Molten iron is poured into sand molds at roughly 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit, then cooled, cleaned by steel shot blasting, and inspected by hand. Lodge introduced pre-seasoning with vegetable oil in 2002, a step that made their cookware ready to use straight out of the box.
The foundry employs hundreds of workers from the surrounding community. Lodge is consistently among the largest employers in Marion County, and the company's commitment to its hometown has never wavered even as competitors moved production overseas.
What Sets Them Apart
Cast iron is one of the few kitchen tools that genuinely improves with age. A Lodge skillet used daily for a decade develops a naturally non-stick surface through accumulated seasoning that no factory coating can replicate. Lodge pans are also induction-compatible, oven-safe to any temperature, and effectively indestructible — the company does not put an expiration date on its products because there isn't one.
Lodge also produces enameled cast iron and carbon steel lines, but the bare cast iron skillets, Dutch ovens, and griddles remain the heart of the brand. The company's century-plus of American manufacturing is baked into every piece.
