GSI Outdoors was founded in 1985 in Spokane, Washington, with a focus on supplying the outdoor recreation market with cookware and kitchen gear designed specifically for camping, backpacking, and expedition use. The Pacific Northwest location placed the company in close proximity to a year-round outdoor culture — hiking the Cascades, climbing in the North Cascades, river camping along the Columbia system — that provided both a natural customer base and real-world testing environments for product development. GSI grew steadily through the expansion of the outdoor recreation industry in the 1990s and 2000s.
The company built particular depth in the camp coffee category, developing percolators, pour-over systems, French press designs, and espresso makers adapted for camp stoves and minimal pack weight. GSI also developed an extensive line of nesting cookware sets, plates, mugs, and utensils in materials from plastic to stainless steel to titanium, covering the full spectrum of outdoor dining requirements from family car camping to ultralight solo backpacking.
