CamelBak has designed hydration packs and water bottles in Petaluma, California since 1989, pioneering the hands-free hydration system that changed how athletes, hikers, and military personnel drink during activity and producing the insulated bottles trusted by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.

Heritage & History

CamelBak was founded in 1989 in Sonora, California by Michael Eidson, an emergency medical technician who created the first hydration pack by filling an IV bag with water and running a tube from it to a hair clip attached to his shirt so he could drink while cycling. The improvised design solved the problem of drinking while riding without stopping — and the solution was so obvious in retrospect that it immediately attracted imitators.

CamelBak filed its first patent in 1990 and began manufacturing hydration packs commercially from California. The US military adopted CamelBak hydration systems for desert operations in the 1990s, validating the technology in the most demanding conditions possible. The civilian market followed, and CamelBak's name became so synonymous with hydration packs that the brand name is used generically to describe the product category it created.
