Burt's Bees was born from a Maine beekeeper's surplus wax in 1984 and grew into America's most recognized natural personal care brand, with its iconic beeswax lip balm still made in the United States.

Heritage & History

Burt Shavitz was a Maine beekeeper selling honey from the back of a truck when he met Roxanne Quimby in 1984. Quimby saw commercial potential in the pounds of surplus beeswax Shavitz could not sell, and together they began making candles and beeswax-based products in a one-room schoolhouse near Dexter, Maine. The beeswax lip balm, introduced in 1991 and packaged in the now-iconic yellow tube, became the product that transformed a cottage craft business into a national brand.

The company relocated its operations to Durham, North Carolina in 1994 to access better distribution infrastructure, and continued expanding its line of natural personal care products through the 1990s and early 2000s. Clorox acquired Burt's Bees in 2007 for approximately $925 million, but the brand has maintained its commitment to natural formulations and United States manufacturing for its core products.

Made in Durham, North Carolina

Burt's Bees operates its primary manufacturing and headquarters operations in Durham, North Carolina, where the company has been based for more than three decades. The Durham facility produces the beeswax lip balm and many of the brand's best-selling natural skin care items using ingredients that meet the company's natural origin standards — a standard that has remained central to the brand's identity through the Clorox ownership era.

The beeswax lip balm remains the single most recognized product in the Burt's Bees lineup and one of the best-selling lip care products in the United States. Its continued domestic production reflects both consumer expectation and the brand's founding heritage — a connection to American land and craft that Burt Shavitz embodied when he was keeping bees in rural Maine.
