Big Agnes designs backpacking tents, sleeping bags, and camping gear in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where the company has been a fixture of the American outdoor industry since 2001. The brand's design-forward approach and Colorado heritage have established it as a leading voice in ultralight backpacking.
Heritage & History
Big Agnes was founded in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 2001 by Bill Gamber and Dennis Madsen, both experienced outdoor enthusiasts who saw an opportunity to build a backpacking brand around innovative sleeping bag and tent design. The brand name comes from Big Agnes Mountain in the Flat Tops Wilderness of Colorado — a reflection of the Colorado outdoor culture that defines the company's identity.
Steamboat Springs, a ski and outdoor recreation destination in the Colorado Rockies, has provided the testing ground and talent base for Big Agnes product development. The company has grown from a sleeping bag specialist to a full-service backpacking brand covering tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and accessories, while maintaining its design headquarters in Colorado.
Designed in Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Big Agnes designs its products at the Steamboat Springs headquarters, where the development team works within the Colorado outdoor recreation community that uses and tests the gear. The design philosophy centers on ultralight performance — achieving the minimum weight for a given level of warmth, weather protection, and durability that backcountry use demands.
The Fly Creek HV UL series represents the ultralight tent design philosophy: sub-two-pound shelter weights achieved through ultralight fabrics and hub-and-strut architecture. The Copper Spur UL series targets the balance point between ultralight and livable volume. Both series are developed and refined in Steamboat Springs against the performance standards set by Colorado backcountry conditions.
What Sets Them Apart
Big Agnes's competitive advantage is the combination of genuine ultralight performance and thoughtful feature design that comes from a team that actually uses the gear in demanding conditions. The sleeping bag-to-sleeping-pad integration system — a sleeve on the bottom of the bag that slides onto a sleeping pad — solves the problem of rolling off a pad in the night without adding weight or bulk.
For backpackers building an ultralight kit, Big Agnes tents and sleeping bags consistently rank at the top of weight-to-livability comparisons. The Colorado design heritage and the brand's focus on gear that performs in the real backcountry conditions of the American West make Big Agnes a trusted name in the technical outdoor community.
